With their diverse color patterns and mating behaviors, birds provide a powerful opportunity to study the genetic and physical mechanisms underpinning signal diversity. In this talk, I will discuss how my work combines digitization of the interior signaling structures of museum specimens with mathematical modeling and phylogenetic comparative methods to reveal how constraints and innovation in signal production limit or enable the evolution of novel ornamental phenotypes.
