Machine Learning Applications in Core Design

Abstract: Core Design or loading pattern optimization requires solving a combinatorial optimization by manipulating the fuel parameters and fuel location. The number of viable solutions is extremely large. Machine learning allows us to navigate the large solution space efficiently to find economic and safe loading patterns.

Bios:

Antony Damico, PWR Core Designer, graduated from Purdue University in 2018 with dual bachelor's degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Business Management. He held two summer internships with Exelon Generation in Nuclear Fuels and Reactor Engineering before joining Exelon full time in the PWR Core Design group  in 2019.

Chris Demetriou, PWR Core Design Lead, graduated with a BS in Nuclear Engineering from UIUC NPRE in 2011 and has since worked for Exelon Generation. He started his career at LaSalle County Generating Station where he served as a Systems Engineer and Reactor Engineer. Since 2016 Chris has been in the PWR Core Design Group at the corporate location. He currently works with his team to design cores for Byron, Braidwood, Ginna, and Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plants. Chris lives in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago and enjoys playing guitar, and cycling in his free time.

Kristin McCoskey, Fuel Reliability & Vedor Oversight Manger, graduated with a BS in Nuclear Engineering from UIUC NPRE in 2007. In her current position she serves as the Fuel Reliability and Vendor Oversight Manager in Exelon's Nuclear Fuels organization. Previous roles with Exelon  include Lead Cycle Manager and Safety Analysis Engineer.
