Global human mobility is the highest it has ever been with the UN estimating that almost twelve percent of the global population qualify as migrants. Robust migration literature examines the macro-level push and pull factors, commonly rooted in socio-economic variables, driving migration trends. This study focuses on the specific impact participation in a religious mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has on driving migration trends. This study found that Filipinos who served a mission experienced a shift in their perceived socio-economic status that significantly impacted their post-mission goal setting and migratory decisions. This presentation will discuss; how missionary experiences shift Filipino’s perception of their socio-economic status using the theory of Relative Deprivation, how these experiences are applied to their post-mission goal setting and migration decisions, and how the skills and resources gained on the mission are significantly impacting the level of involvement Filipino’s seek from their households in making migration decisions and strategizing migratory processes.
