Dr. Ekker is Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Director of the Precision Gene Editing Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic. The Ekker laboratory – funded by the NIH for over 20 years – uses the zebrafish as the pioneering in vivo model system, coupled with human cells in vitro for developing new genome engineering tools and approaches. A strong proponent of the bench-to-business-to-bedside (3B) model of translational science, Dr. Ekker founded the Office of Entrepreneurship in the Center for Clinical and Translational Science at Mayo and has co-founded five biotech startups to date. Ongoing genome engineering work includes developing new approaches to modify the mitochondrial genome for discovery science and towards therapeutic applications.
