Diversity in medicine is crucial to the achievement of health equity. The visibility, amenability, and availability of African-American male attending physicians practicing in various settings and specialties to mentor African-American students interested in a career in medicine is crucial to overcoming the diminutive number of African-American males applying to medical school. Only 6% of all physicians are African-American. Less than 1% of all physicians are African-American men. Medical school-based pipeline programs offering premedical training programs for underrepresented minorities in medicine, strong intramural recruitment campaigns, and departments that employ the tenets of diversity, equity, and inclusion aimed at achieving a high social mission rating are necessary components of all medical school programs as well as to help achieve equitable health care for all Americans. These topics will be surveyed and discussed in this month's series talk.

Dr. Earl Stewart, Jr, earned his medical degree from the Meharry Medical College's School of Medicine and completed residency training in Categorical Internal Medicine at Brown University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and recipient of numerous awards, including Georgia Trend Top Doctor in 2021 and the 2022 40 Under 40 Leader in Minority Health by the National Minority Quality Forum. Dr. Stewart is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
