Language drives our understanding of food, and especially wine. The words and images we use to describe their taste, origin, and production, and desirability are communications choices. In this course, we will study how discourse and images construct national identities, social status, cultural narratives, and an ethos of sustainability. We pay special attention to the culture of France, considering the ways that land and location are central organizing concepts, especially through the concepts of terroir and appellations.
