Through creating and growing community gardens with Project Green to address the diabetes epidemic, Yanaba Schroeder (Navajo; Major: Human Development & Family Studies) experienced a personal cultural awakening. What began as a simple effort to provide fresh produce for my community became something much deeper; a revitalization of Navajo foodways and land stewardship. This journey opened her eyes to the responsibility of kinship and reminded Yanaba that reconnecting with their food and land is also a way of reconnecting with our identity and belonging.
