Chip McNeill, conductor

Whether behind the bass or away from it, Christian McBride is always of the music. A seven-time Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer, and bandleader, McBride is the Artistic Director of the historic Newport Jazz Festival and the TD James Moody Jazz Festival, Co-Artistic Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, and Artistic Advisor of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. He is also a respected educator and advocate as the Artistic Director of Jazz House KiDS and the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions. In addition to consistent touring, McBride hosts NPR’s Jazz Night in America and The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian on SiriusXM. From jazz to R&B, pop/rock, hip-hop/neo-soul to classical, he is a luminary with one hand ever reaching for new heights and the other extended in fellowship—and perhaps the hint of a challenge—inviting us to join him. This performance, part of the New Awakenings collaboration between the School of Music, College of Fine and Applied Arts, and Krannert Center, incorporates guest artists including the U of I Concert Jazz Band, narrators, and a community choir in McBride’s The Movement Revisited—A Musical Portrait of Four Icons, which pays tribute to Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Martin Luther King Jr. through music and words.

If you can, show your love for the arts by purchasing an “Advocate” ticket; the additional ticket cost directly benefits Krannert Center.
