Do you like the idea of pursuing a Latina/Latino Studies degree but are unsure of what that career path to explore? Join our discussion with a couple of LLS professors and LLS major alumni who have used their LLS degrees to pursue a diverse range of career paths and professions.

Panelist Participants:

Brian Fernandez, Esq. is a first-generation college graduate and comes from an immigrant household. Brian graduated with a double major in Latina/Latino studies and Sociology in 2015. Brian attended Northern Illinois University College of Law. Brian graduated with his Juris Doctorate in May 2019 and was sworn in as an Attorney at Law in November 2019. Brian currently works for a firm in the suburbs dealing with real estate law and estate planning.

Cindy San Miguel, MPH is a 2013 major from the Latina/Latino studies Department. Cindy received Master’s in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2016. She is currently a program evaluation manager with the Sinai Urban Health Institute.  Cindy’s interests are at the intersection of maternal and child health and health equity.

Professor Julie A. Dowling is an Associate Professor in the Department of Latina/Latino Studies and Affiliate Faculty in the Departments of Sociology and Gender and Women's Studies. Dr. Dowling's research has focused on the US Census and how definitions of race and ethnicity are understood by Latinos.

Professor Natalie Lira is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Latina/Latino Studies and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies. Dr. Lira's research uncovers the largely neglected racial aspects of California’s eugenic sterilization program.
