This academic year, graduate students from the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese--and other departments--will organize and host two graduate student conferences focused on language and linguistics - the 13th annual Illinois Language and Linguistics Society (ILLS) Conference and the 3nd annual Sociolinguistics Symposium (SOSY 2021). Both will be completely virtual!
SPECIAL NOTE: Jan Blommaert’s untimely passing on 7 January 2021 is a tremendous loss to the academic community of (socio-)linguists. The impact of his life’s work on those of us who are still learning from his writings is immense and immeasurable. We are saddened, but hopeful that the scholarship he has left behind will keep us moving steadily towards our semiotic futures. This year’s Sociolinguistics Symposium (SOSY) is dedicated to his memory — a tribute to his life-in/and-research will be given by Dr. Farzad Karimzad during the Symposium!
