Systems Thinking in Medical Education

Medical education operates within a complex system of learners, faculty, curricula, assessment practices, clinical environments, and institutional structures. Understanding how these elements interact can help educators identify root causes of challenges, anticipate unintended consequences, and design more effective and sustainable solutions. This session will introduce key concepts of systems thinking and explore practical applications within medical education.

Try It Before You Attend

Before the session, take 3–5 minutes to reflect on the following question:

Think of a persistent challenge in your teaching, curriculum, assessment practices, learner performance, faculty engagement, or educational program. Why do you think this challenge has been difficult to solve?

There is no need to submit a response. Simply come prepared to discuss your example and explore it through a systems-thinking lens during the session.
