Description:  The State of Illinois administers tens of billions of dollars in grants and contracts each year.  This session will provide an overview of how to identify and apply for government grants issued in Illinois.  Key concepts will include:  getting organized to conduct a grant search; accessing state funding announcements; determining if a grant opportunity is a good fit for your organization’s funding needs; completing the pre-qualification steps; identifying key information in a Request for Proposal; outlining a grant proposal narrative; completing state budget forms; and applying tips of the trade to submit a winning grant proposal.  This session is designed for novice grantseekers with little or no experience with government grants.

Kristin Olson, Grant Writing Specialist, began writing grants when she was a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Springfield. After earning her Master’s degree in non-profit organization management, she worked in the non-profit sector for seven years.  In 2006, she launched her consulting business, Grants Galore, and has submitted 640 grant proposals to date.  With a success rate of 55%, she has secured more than $210 million in grant funding and government contracts for nonprofit organizations and units of local government throughout the U.S.  Kristin enjoys singing, playing piano, gardening, and other activities that don’t involve looking at a computer screen!
