This two for one workshop will include an overview of private foundation funding followed up by a close look at locating funders in the Foundation Directory Online Professional.

 This presentation will be an introduction on what to consider when seeking private foundation funding. Following this overview, there will be a demonstration of the specialized database, Foundation Directory Online Professional the most comprehensive prospect research tool for fundraisers, with over 226,000+ grantmaker profiles. The workshop will teach you how to Interpret the information found about a foundation and its various funding areas. You will also learn helpful Information regarding locating the Foundation Center’s online tutorials and webstreams as well as instruction on the use of CINRC reference materials to supplement your grant search. The workshop will also include a discussion of tips about proposal writing and communicating with the foundations.

 Upon completion of this workshop you should be able to:

  • Explain what FDO is
  • Identify your needs in preparation for searching for potential grantmakers in FDO
  • Research potential grantmakers using a project-based search in FDO
  • Evaluate prospects for strong or weak fit using FDO
  • Identify the options for accessing FDO
  • Access resources for getting help with FDO

Pamela Salela is faculty at UIS in the Library.  She has an M.A. in Educational Policy Studies from UIUC and an M.S. from the iSchool at UIUC. She has been the coordinator of the Central Illinois Nonprofit Resource Center since 2005.

Sarah Rice is a Forefront librarian. Sarah got her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Louisville and her master's in library science from the University of Kentucky. She has worked at Triton College as a reference librarian, served as Outreach and User Experience Librarian at Sullivan, and was the manager of Strayer University's Learning Resource Center.
