Professor Lesley Wexler joined the University of Illinois Law School faculty in fall 2010. Before coming to Illinois, Professor Wexler taught at the Florida State University College of Law. Prior to that, she spent two years at the University of Chicago Law School as a Bigelow Fellow and Lecturer on Law.

Professor Wexler has broad research interests in international humanitarian law, human rights law, and sex discrimination. Professor Wexler specializes in those legal areas that reflect the movement of anti-discrimination and humanitarian norms through domestic law, international law, social movements, and corporations. She has written extensively on the #MeToo movement and its relationship with the law. She has also published on the legitimacy of targeting decisions, the blood diamond trade, and the regulation of depleted uranium and landmines, along with a series of articles on human rights impact statements. Her work has drawn on case studies using Time’s Up, DeBeers, Wal-Mart, and Chick-fil-A.

Professor Wexler earned her BA with honors from the University of Michigan and her JD with honors from the University of Chicago Law School. While in law school, she served on the boards of both the Chicago International Law Journal and the Chicago Legal Forum.

Professor Wexler clerked for Judge Thomas Reavley of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and Judge William Wayne Justice on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. She worked for Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood as well as Wilmer Cutler & Pickering.

The John D. Colombo Professorship in Law

The John D. Colombo Professorship in Law was established through an estate gift from June Evelyn Michael of St. Louis, Missouri to fund the Professorship and provide need-based scholarships for students in the College of Law. Michael was born in Herrin, Illinois in 1921 and passed away in 2019. She worked for Bell Telephone, the FBI, and Washington University at St. Louis, where she also attended school. The gift was made in honor of her cousin, Professor Colombo, the Albert E. Jenner Jr. Professor of Law Emeritus. Colombo served as the associate dean of the College from 1995-98, 1999-2000 and 2010-12, acting dean during 1998 and 2001, and interim dean from 2014-15 and in 2002. He also was the Thomas M. Mengler Faculty Scholar from 2004-06. A member of the Illinois faculty since 1988, Colombo primarily teaches tax law. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and co-author of two books on the theory of tax exemption for charitable organizations, the exemption standards for nonprofit hospitals, and commercial activity by charities.

Event is free, and open to the campus community.
