CLE: Appellate Advocacy

Wednesday, December 1, 2021
12-1 P.M. (CST)

This course is approved for 1.00 Illinois MCLE general credit hours.

This session will focus on taking appeals from trial court decisions and defending against appeals of trial court decisions in your client's favor. The course will begin with a focus on the Record on Appeal, and how that Record is used to support an appeal and discern appealable issues. Included in the discussion of the Record is the use of the Record in preparing an Appendix. Attendees will look at Appellant and Appellee briefs and the rules governing each. Attendees will also learn about Oral Argument rules and procedures. The main focus will be on appeals in the Illinois appellate courts, but leave to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court will also be covered. The instructor will refer to Illinois Supreme Court rules governing appeals. More generally, the class will discuss how appellate work differs from trial work, and in what situations appeal rights should be considered and discussed with clients.
