University of Illinois College of Law Leadership Project General Counsel Roundtable:

"Lessons on Leadership"

60-minute presentation (virtual event, no scheduled break)

Description: This is a sixty-minute presentation featuring a roundtable discussion by several high-level in-house attorneys on the topic of leadership. Each panelist will share their perspectives on how to lead their legal departments, and lessons that attorneys can learn from business leaders. Key to this discussion will be issues related to professionalism, diversity and inclusion, and civility, and how practicing attorneys can apply these concepts in their practices. This course is designed as a beginner to intermediate level course. 

This course has been approved for 1.00 Illinois MCLE general credit hour.

Speaker Information:

Sue Bettman currently serves as a partner at Brunswick Group, a strategic communications advisory firm. Prior to this role, she served as Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel of LSC Communications, then a publicly traded provider of digital and print communications and logistics services. At LSC, Sue was responsible for the human resources, marketing and communications, government affairs, insurance, legal, compliance, and environmental, health and safety functions. 

Prior to LSC, Sue served as General Counsel of RR Donnelley, Huron Consulting Group, and True North Communications. She started her career and became a partner at Kirkland & Ellis where she developed expertise in a broad range of complex transactions, including public and private securities offerings, negotiated acquisitions and divestitures, and debt financings.

Sue graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and earned her J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law. Sue is a member of The Chicago Network and the Economic Club of Chicago. She serves on the Board of Regents of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls and on the Board of Trustees of the Northwestern University Library.

Brian Ellis received his undergraduate degree from Lake Forest College and his J.D. from University of Illinois College of Law. Brian joined Danaher as Senior Vice President and General Counsel in January 2016, bringing a wealth of experience leading and developing global legal teams and supporting business growth. He leads Danaher’s global legal organization and ensures a strong culture of integrity and compliance. His areas of responsibility includes corporate governance, quality assurance and regulatory affairs, sustainability, intellectual property and risk management as well as the company’s environment, health and safety group.  He also currently serves on the Board of Directors of Entergy Corporation.

In previous roles, Brian served as General Counsel of Medtronic’s Restorative Therapies Group and as Chief Compliance Officer, and later General Counsel of Monitoring Solutions and Services, at GE Healthcare. Early in his career, he was a partner in private law firms and an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Greg Miarecki holds an undergraduate degree in Public Policy and a J.D. from the University of Chicago. Currently, he serves as the Executive Assistant Dean for Career Planning and Professional Development at the University of Illinois College of Law. He also serves as the Director of the College of Law’s Leadership Project, a program designed to teach leadership skills to students and to promote debate and discussion about leadership in the legal profession. Prior to his academic roles, Greg was a partner at Winston & Strawn LLP in Chicago, where he focused on complex commercial and white-collar criminal litigation.

Theresa Shea obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and her J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law, having grown up an hour south of Chicago in a small farm town named Manhattan. Theresa is Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Utz Brands, Inc., one of the largest salty snack companies in the United States. Prior to joining Utz in July of 2021, Theresa served as General Counsel of True Value Company from 2018-2021 and Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment from 2007-2018.  Prior to True Value, Theresa was in-house at United Airlines and an associate at Seyfarth Shaw in Chicago.  Theresa is a certified English teacher and spends lots of her life as a lawyer proactively training her colleagues to appropriately minimize business risk.
