This CLE program will concentrate on common mistakes made by attorneys and how to avoid them, with an emphasis on civility and appropriate behavior. The program will be led by the following:

Legal Aid of Chicago: Criminal Records Relief Clinic

For people with past arrests or convictions, expunging or sealing of records can open access to social services, education, housing, employment, and other opportunities that may have been denied for years. As a volunteer for this program, you can directly impact a person’s livelihood.
Training - Legal Aid Chicago provides training on how to prepare a criminal expungement petition. Attorneys licensed in Illinois will receive CLE credit for the training (1 hour).
Petitions and Client Calls - After the training, volunteers will prepare a petition for expungement and sealing for pre-screened clients. Clients will not be present during the clinic, but volunteers will prepare the petitions and call clients to provide a status update. Legal Aid Chicago will provide a checklist for what to say to clients, and clients will be on notice to expect a call.
