In this book talk, Professor Jose Atiles presents his forthcoming book, "Islands of Exception: Law, Empire, and Offshore Finance in the Caribbean" (Cambridge University Press 2026). The book provides a critical perspective on offshore finance, examining its colonial foundations and role in global capitalism.
About the Speaker
Professor Atiles is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He holds PhDs in Sociology of Law and in Philosophy, and his research examines the sociolegal and criminological impacts of U.S. colonialism in Puerto Rico, with particular attention to emergency powers, corruption, and state-corporate crime. His work has appeared in leading journals, including The British Journal of Criminology, The Sociological Review, Critical Sociology, and Regulation & Governance.This event is free and open to the public; registration is not required.
