Non-Traditional Publishing and Digitization in Slavic and East European Countries is a workshop focused on Slavic and East European resources, specifically primary sources created by underground, alternative, and counter-culture social groups.
This workshop will address the relevance of non-traditional publishing to a wider audience of students, scholars, librarians, researchers, and collectors. An examination of the usefulness and the validity of these resources in the context of research will be provided. Moreover, panelists will discuss the accessibility of these materials in the digital age, with special focus on obstacles for access and copyright issues.
Panelists will include:
Ann Komaromi of the University of Toronto, an inspiring researcher and scholar who played a vital role in the construction of the Project for the Study of Dissidence and Samizdat.
Olga Zaslavskaya of the International Alternative Culture Center, who has worked closely with samizdat for years. She will speak on classical samizdat and normal press related to the informal art scenes of late socialism through the early post-Soviet period.
Veronika Trotter of Indiana University, a scholar and librarian. She will speak on her new and exciting research on digitization of Russian rock music zines.
