Junior Faculty Seminar Series on Teaching & Learning

Come join this learning community by participating in this specially designed seminar series for junior faculty, though all are welcomed to participate. We'll share strategies and best practices for effective and efficient teaching. There will be great conversations, handouts, and lunch! Since each session builds on each other, we hope you will be able to attend all the meetings.

Session 4: Cheating: - An Inappropriate Student Response to an Ineffective Learning Environment

Did you know that three-quarters of college students have reported they have cheated during their undergraduate years?  James Lang’s research has found that students often cheat because “their learning environments give them ample incentives to try – and that strategies which make cheating less worthwhile also improve student learning.”  And sometimes, students are just confused; as in cooperative learning, "How much and when can we share with each other?"

We will be drawing from his book “Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty” to look at ways in which our course design, exams and grading, assignments, and rapport can reduce academic dishonesty and promote student learning and self-efficacy.

This workshop counts towards the Graduate Teacher Certificate, the Teacher Scholar Certificate or the Certificate in Foundations of Teaching.
