The history of photographic theory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is often preoccupied with “Western” criticism and arguments. Yet, this criticism has ignored the development of photographic theory in the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s. In this REEEC New Directions Lecture, Dr. Jessica Werneke (University of Iowa) will discuss her research on the journal Sovetskoe foto and the stylistic and analytic discussions found therein.
