Matthew W. Finkin will speak about challenges to academic freedom from the right, outside the university, and the left, inside the university, including the boycott of Israel, the reaction against the boycott, the controversy over academic departments’ political statements, and punishments for offensive speech in the classroom. Questions and discussion will follow. A leading scholar of academic freedom and labor law, Finkin is Swanlund Endowed Chair, Center for Advanced Study Professor, and Director of the Program in Comparative Labor and Employment Law & Policy. After the presentation and discussion, the UIUC AAUP chapter will hold its (brief) annual meeting.
