Abstract
As the world moves to a lower carbon future, the measurement and verification of decarbonization policies is critical to ensuring compliance and voluntary goals are met. The M-RETS platform provides market participants including regulators, renewable generators, and brokers an independent tool that provides transactional liquidity, inventory management, and claims validation. As the emphasis on decarbonization continues, the M-RETS platform can accommodate tracking book and claim style environmental commodity markets as they evolve. M-RETS facilitates REC transactions by issuing a unique, traceable digital certificate for every megawatthour (“MWh”) of renewable energy generated by registered units or imported into its platform. For RTCs, M-RETS facilitates transactions by issuing a unique, traceable digital certificate for every dekatherm (“dth”) produced by a renewable thermal technology. M-RETS users retire Certificates to comply with state policy or to serve the voluntary market and to ensure that Certificates are not double-counted. This presentation will discuss the basics of environmental commodity markets, how software will play an increasing role in assisting with tracking decarbonization, how regulators are able to access these systems
to oversee compliance markets, and how M-RETS manage the market and software complexity, and what the future of these mature and emerging markets holds.
