Daniel Eck has spent years developing a principled way to rank baseball’s greatest performers across all eras. His approach compares players across history by placing their achievements in the context of the pool of eligible baseball talent in a given year. By accounting for differences in competitive environments, factors such as improved training methods and the use of performance-enhancing drugs in certain eras are incorporated implicitly into the achievement models for those seasons, rather than handled through ad hoc adjustments. All results and project materials are housed on an accessible website: https://eckeraadjustment.web.illinois.edu/.

More broadly, Daniel Eck’s research focuses on methodological development motivated by scientific and social-scientific collaborations, and spans a wide range of topics within statistics.
