Race-conscious drawing of electoral districts has long been a remedy, under the federal Voting Rights Act, for historical discrimination in voting. But does consideration of race in drawing district lines violate the U.S. Constitution? In a pending case, the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to decide. The Court’s answer could alter election laws and practices throughout the nation. This session will explore what is at stake and what lies ahead for American democracy.
Jason Mazzone is the Albert E. Jenner, Jr. Professor at the University of Illinois College of Law and Director of the Illinois Program in Constitutional Theory, History and Law. He is an expert on constitutional law and history and on the U.S. Supreme Court. His scholarship has been cited by many courts, and he is a regular national media commentator.
