Harley T. Johnson
Founder Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Chief Executive Officer of Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics ParkIn 2024, Professor Harley Johnson was named Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for IQMP, serving as executive leader for the IQMP to execute the vision and mission of the quantum and microelectronics opportunities for the University of Illinois, its partners, and the state of Illinois. Johnson is taking the lead in this opportunity to define the future of quantum computing hardware and algorithms, and to take this role, he formally stepped down from his role as Associate Dean for Research in The Grainger College of Engineering, a position in which he served for five years. Professor Johnson is a Founder Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, and he also holds a courtesy appointment as Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and affiliate appointments in the Materials Research Lab (MRL) and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Professor Johnson is the former Director and PI of the Illinois NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (I-MRSEC), based at MRL. In his research, he studies the mechanics of electronic and quantum materials, the mechanics of nanostructures, and optical properties of materials.
