Associate Professor, European Union Center

Sara Gerke will discuss data privacy risks in light of the recent bankruptcy proceedings of the direct-to-consumer genetic testing company 23andMe. The presentation also examines whether, and if so to what extent, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), and relevant state privacy laws apply to personal information collected by direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies.

Sara Gerke’s current research focuses on the ethical and legal challenges of artificial intelligence and big data for health care and health law in the United States and Europe. Gerke is leading several research projects funded by the NIH and the European Union. She has over 70 publications in health law and bioethics, especially AI and digital health. Her work has appeared in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Science, and Nature Medicine
