Chancellor’s Scholars traveled to Rome from May 13 - 23, 2019 for a CHP section of HIST 199, Architecture and Culture of Rome, on a CHP Intercultural Study Tour designed to immerse students in the history, culture and architecture of Rome and surrounding areas, a shared foray with LAS James Scholars. Students experienced the wonders of the Colosseum, Pantheon, and the Roman Forum, visited Saint Peter’s Basilica including a papal audience, and toured the Vatican and its treasures, including the Sistine Chapel. The group visited palaces and piazzas, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain and explored the food, culture and urban environment of the historic city center. Students also participated in a day trip to Pisa and Florence, and a day trip to Tivoli enhanced participants’ understanding of the Roman and Italian culture through visiting the Italian countryside and its villas. The course began on campus with a preparatory mini-course designed to provide students the historical and cultural background knowledge to make the most of this Rome experience. UI Architecture Professor Kevin Hinders, CHP Director Kim Graber and CHP Assistant Director Anne Price led the trip.
