Theoretical perspectives on the atmospheric water cycle
Traditionally the atmospheric water cycle can be divided into 3 stages: evaporation, transport, and precipitation. Due to its societal relevance, most research focuses on the precipitation stage. In this talk, I will show some recent research on the first 2 stages and discuss how evaporation and transport are linked to the dynamics of the atmosphere, and how understanding this connection is useful both for atmospheric dynamics and for studying precipitation. First, I will show how evaporation provides a mechanism for coupling the atmosphere and ocean together and provides a mechanism for heat transport compensation. Second, I will show how tropical evaporation plays an important role in setting local precipitation patterns by generating buoyancy, and how this can be used to track trends in future evaporation. Lastly, I will show a new diagnostic for studying the atmospheric water cycle, Eulerian atmospheric water age tracers, which we use to study both the mean distribution of water vapor in the atmosphere, and the transport dynamics in extreme events.
