Description:

Marketing coordinators, web designers, and communicators are increasingly expected to be able to navigate nuanced, clear communication on complex issues of race and racism. Join Elizabeth Tsukahara and Ross Wantland from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion as they present on the approach and strategies for creating culturally responsive, anti-racist communication. Participants will also learn about some of the ways that racial bias and racism may be unintentionally communicated, and ways to develop a toolkit of tactics to proactively address racism and enhance your messages online.

Presenters:

Elizabeth Tsukahara (Assistant Director for Communications, OVCDEI) has worked nearly 10 years in communication at the University of Illinois. Currently, she serves as the Assistant Director for Communications in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and prior to that she worked with the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, the Office of Inclusion & Intercultural Relations, and Student Affairs. Elizabeth is dedicated to changing the world one adjective at a time, using critical analysis and intersectional approaches to crafting communications to promote equity and fairness.

Ross Wantland (Director of Curriculum Development and Education, OVCDEI) is a farm-raised, social justice and violence prevention educator with nearly 20 years of experience in higher education. Ross began working at the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion after having previously worked in the areas of social justice training and sexual violence prevention education. In his current role, Ross provides training, coaching, and coordination around equity efforts on campus. Ross lives in Champaign with his amazing psychologist partner and their emo tween, and can be found tending his expanding COVID garden.
