Individuals, businesses, schools, government agencies, and organizations can join the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, as part of the 2026 International ShakeOut Day. Millions of people worldwide will participate in this annual earthquake preparedness exercise.
During an earthquake, you may have only seconds to protect yourself before strong shaking knocks you down or falling objects injure you. Practicing the Drop, Cover, and Hold On drill can help you respond quickly and safely during an earthquake.
The drill focuses on three important steps:
- DROP to your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down.
- COVER your head and neck. If a sturdy desk or table is nearby, crawl underneath it for protection.
- HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops. If you cannot get under a desk or table, stay low and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms.
Do not run outside or into another room during the shaking.
Earthquakes can happen when you're at home, at work, or traveling. Knowing how to respond can help protect you wherever you are.
Everyone can participate! Register for the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut and learn how to participate. The event website offers resources to help individuals, families, schools, businesses, and organizations prepare for the drill and improve earthquake safety.
