Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) fusion devices, distinct from many other fusion technologies, utilize electric fields to confine a plasma. Currently, IECs serve as versatile neutron sources for various applications, such as neutron activation analysis and medical isotope production. Beyond their role as neutron sources, IECs are being explored for burning alternative fusion fuels and are also under investigation as potential space propulsion systems. In this talk, I will discuss the history of IECs and the current state of IEC research.
