Prof. Nazanin Derakhshan, University of Reading, UK, will lecture on "Building Resilience in the Vulnerable: The Role of Attentional Control."
Anxiety and depression continue to be the leading causes of disability worldwide. Increasing evidence however has provided support for the role of attentional control as a determinant by which trait vulnerability to anxiety and depression can be understood. It follows that targeting attentional control using experimental tools improving plasticity of supporting neuro-cognitive functions can help reduce emotional vulnerability and improve behavioural outcomes. I will discuss a trajectory of research on the role of attentional control in vulnerability and resilience and in context of breast cancer where anxiety and depression and neuro-cognitive impairments can loom high for years after diagnosis. Implications for treatment, policy change and new guidelines for addressing psychopathology are discussed."
Notes: 1. This talk will be online only (same time, though: 12:00 pm, CST). 2. As with the previous *external speakers, the talk will be followed by an informal discussion with trainees, which will be nested within the 90-min interval of the seminar time. Hence, trainees are invited to stick around after the talk. *We do this with the external speakers because our local speakers are more easily accessible in person (for discussions, advice, etc.).
