Research Safety 501: Graduate student’s role in promoting a culture of safety in academic laboratories
Abstratct: University policy states that all university personnel and visitors have a duty to 1) comply with State and Federal environmental health and safety regulations; 2) a duty to protect the safety and health of other members of the campus community, and are responsible for their own safety obligations and behaviors. What does responsibility for safety mean in the context of research that has inherent risk? Safety is a shared responsibility, and this seminar discusses how graduate students can contribute to the safety climate in their respective research groups, learn of resources on campus that can help graduate students foster labs that are free from recognized hazards that can cause serious physical harm or ill health, and initiate an ongoing conversation with College safety professionals.
Ed Chainani is the Assistant Director of the Grainger College of Engineering, Office of Safety. He has over 20 years experience in laboratory planning and scientific research. He obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Illinois.
Jose Corral is currently a Safety Engineer for the Grainger College of Engineering. Experience includes time as a Research Safety Professional at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and as a Chemist for a pharmaceutical company.
