J.D. Smith, PhD
Associate Professor
Director of the Dissemination and Implementation Science Core
Utah Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute
Co-Director/MPI Community Intervention to Reduce CardiovascuLar Disease in Chicago (CIRCL-Chicago) Implementation Research Center

J.D. Smith, PhD is Associate Professor in the University of Utah Intermountain Healthcare Department of Population Health Sciences in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah. He directs the Dissemination and Implementation Science Core (DISC) of the Utah Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and Co-Directs the Health Behavior Intervention, Implementation, and Translation (HaBiiT) Core of the University of Utah Diabetes and Metabolism Research Center. He is MPI and Co-Director of the CIRCL-Chicago Implementation Research Center, funded by NHLBI, that aims to reduce disparities in hypertension control among African Americans on Chicago’s South Side. As an implementation scientist and clinical psychologist, Dr. Smith leads the implementation science activities of projects focused on interventions for obesity, hypertension, cancer prevention and survivorship, mental health, HIV prevention and treatment, and other conditions. His research has been supported by the NIH, CDC, AHRQ, HRSA, USDA, and foundations. He serves on national committees and advisory panels on implementation science and is the Associate Editor of the journals Prevention Science and Families, Systems, and Health. Previously, Dr. Smith was Associate Professor in the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University where he served as Associate Director of the NIDA-funded Center for Prevention Implementation Methodology for Drug Abuse and HIV and Co-Director of the Program in Dissemination and Implementation Science in NUCATS.

Presentation abstract:

The Implementation Research Logic Model (IRLM; Smith, Li, & Rafferty, 2020, Imp Sci) was developed to aid investigators in combining multiple models and frameworks to improve the design, hypothesis testing, and rigor of implementation research studies. Hybrid effectiveness-implementation approaches that simultaneously attempt to answer research questions related to the effects of the clinical/health/preventive intervention on recipient-level (e.g., patient) outcomes and the impact of implementation strategies on system-level implementation outcomes (e.g., adoption, reach, fidelity, sustainment) have become increasingly more common in the past decade. The IRLM provides a useful tool for designing and reporting the results of studies that use hybrid approaches. This talk will briefly present the IRLM and hybrid approach methodologies and provide examples and guidance on their complementary use.

Presented by Department of Medicine – Center for Dissemination & Implementation Science, A Richard Weber, MD Supported Lecture & Co-sponsored by the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS)
