Junior faculty in the health sciences can now apply to 2 grant writing training programs for Fall 2020. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant Writing Series guides researchers to prepare a strong NIH proposal. New for 2020, the Illinois Foundation Fellows Program will help investigators identify & pursue potential private foundation sponsors to support their research.

IHSI’s NIH Grant Writing Series

This popular series prepares junior faculty (years 2+) to submit their first R01 or other individual investigator proposals to the NIH, with particular attention this year toward COVID-19 opportunities. Since 2015, 55 junior faculty have been nominated by their departments and selected to complete the full program. Our records show that these faculty have been awarded $21.8M in NIH funding to date.

Each participant will write and compile an advanced draft of an NIH proposal that has been reviewed by both their peers and an experienced faculty mentor. The selected participants will be asked to attend the six lecture/discussion sessions and participate in a peer review workshop. They will also be matched with an experienced faculty member who will mentor the participant during the grant writing process. More information can be found at go.illinois.edu/NIHgrantwritingseries.

Illinois Foundation Fellows Program

The Office of Foundation Relations, in partnership with IHSI and the Office of Proposal Development in the OVCRI, have developed this new program to help early-career investigators in the health sciences learn how to identify and pursue potential private foundation sponsors to support their research. Participants in this program will attend four seminar/discussion sessions (3 hours each) addressing various aspects of the private foundation landscape and campus submission process for foundation applications. More information can be found at go.illinois.edu/IllinoisFoundationFellows. Questions about this new program may be directed to Julie Elzanati at 217-300-5579 or elzanati@illinois.edu.

How to apply

Early-career faculty (years 2+) may apply to either one or both programs. A letter of support from your department head is required for consideration for either program. A single letter can be used to apply to both programs. Please have your department head send a letter of support to healthinstitute@illinois.edu. Application deadline has been EXTENDED until July 17, 2020. Apply now.
