Panel Participants

Charles Fogelman is a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Global Studies Program, where he teaches courses on markets, development, and gender. He is also a faculty affiliate with the Center for African Studies and the Women and Gender in Global Perspectives Program. Fogelman is trained as a human geographer and his research focuses on land, gender, and development in sub-Saharan Africa. He is a 2017 alumnus of the University of Illinois, where he completed a Ph.D. in Geography with a minor in Gender Relations in International Development.

Alice Iannantuoni is a PhD student in Political Science, focusing on the political economy of development and foreign aid. Alice completed the WGGP minor in Gender Relations in International Development in May 2017. She received the Maria Pia Gratton International Award in 2015–2016, and was the Rita and Arnold Goodman Fellow in 2017–2018.

Thornton Miller is a PhD Candidate in Musicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is pursuing a doctoral minor in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies; and has received a Fulbright Fellowship and support from the University of Illinois to do archival research in Russia and the UK. Mr. Miller has contributed a chapter to the collection Benjamin Britten Studies: An Inexplicit Art on Britten’s efforts to transfer his stage works to Soviet theaters, and his essay on expressions of conflict in the opera Peter Grimes was published in Korean translation in the collection Opera and Aesthetics II. He is interested in the interchange of music and musicians between the UK and the USSR during the Cold War, and has presented his research in Austria, Russia, the UK, and the US.

Anna Waller is a Ph.D. candidate of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Her work is on the development of a smartphone iron sensor for fortified foods in Mexico. She was a 2019 Fulbright Garcia-Robles Fellow and a Tinker 2018 Fellow both in Mexico, and has received grants to conduct nutrition research in Tanzania and India. Upon completing her Ph.D., she hopes to continue working in the realm of global nutrition, addressing micronutrient deficiencies in low-income countries.
