Attending to What Matters: The Practice of Medicine and the Limits of Artificial Intelligence

Medicine has always embraced novel technologies. The next hottest thing in medicine is Artificial Intelligence in which it is expected that AI will be better at doing what doctors do than humans. This talk will question three dimensions of medicine that machines may struggle to do better than human doctors, and it will also question whether the dominant mode of medical education already imagines medical decision-making as an algorithmic exercise.

Dr. Jeffrey P. Bishop is a social and moral philosopher, teaching medical ethics and philosophy at Saint Louis University. He is also a physician. Prof. Bishop holds the Tenet Endowed Chair in Health Care Ethics and is the Director of the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics.
