We studied problems in modern transportation systems based on proper utilization of different types of information in various ways. Specifically, we proposed novel methodologies and generated new insights using concrete applications for the following dimensions: 1) Value of information and sampling-based approach in solving network optimization problems with uncertainty. 2) Utilization of system data and forecast for real-time control of complex humancentered
infrastructure systems. 3) Remedy of inaccurate travel time estimate on dynamic routing using additional information. 4) Strategic information scheme design for flow improvement on traffic networks. Our study provides useful references, practical solutions and
new thinking for existent nontrivial problems and emerging challenges in transportation operations and planning under the information age and unprecedented demand for smart and sustainable mobility.
