Census 2020 will be the most controversial decennial census in decades. Gabriel Lewis (Champaign County Regional Planning Commission) and Gloria Yen (Director of the New American Welcome Center, University YMCA) will speak about impacts and implications of the 2020 census for our local Champaign-Urbana community. Q & A and discussion will follow.

Gabriel Lewis is a Planner at the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC).  He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).  He has thirteen years of experience in planning, much of that centered on transportation planning, and has recently expanding his work to demographic and general planning.

Gloria Yen is the Director of the New American Welcome Center at the University YMCA where she oversees the direction and scope of the Y's immigrant integration initiatives from programming to grant funding and communications. A second generation Taiwanese American, Gloria majored in musicology at the University of Illinois before moving on to the University of Chicago for an MA in Social Sciences.

Gloria's commitment to working alongside marginalized communities has led her to the fields of human development and disability studies, oral history, and most recently, immigrant integration. A resident of Urbana (#urbanalove) and forever foodie, you can find Gloria trying new recipes (@gloria.yen), training for the Illinois Half Marathon, and watching YouTube videos of street food vendors across the world.
