Since the election, the meaning of "The Midwest" seems to have shifted in the minds of Americans--or at least in the headlines of the media. As a publisher of a small press and magazine focused on the Rust Belt, I will discuss perceptions of the region pre- and post-Trump, and why it's vital to tell our stories accurately and well.

Anne Trubek is the director of Belt Publishing, a former tenured professor of Rhetoric and Composition at Oberlin College (1997–2015), and founder of "The Thinking Writer," a seminar for academic and freelance writers on pitching to paying publications for general audiences. She is the author of numerous books and articles, including most recently The History and Uncertain Future of Handwriting  (Bloomsbury USA, 2016) and A Skeptic's Guide to Writers' Houses (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2010). Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Wired, Smithsonian, and dozens of other publications.
