This talk considers the need for flexible methodologies during research amidst instability and violence in the field. Drawing on auto-ethnographic accounts, transnational feminist theory and studies of affect, I ask what can we learn from "bad feelings" that arise in fieldwork. I propose a method of using "bad feelings" to orient our research questions, subjects of inquiry, and to broaden how we conceive of knowledge production.

Ghassan Moussawi is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
