Machismo and Machinations: The Performance of Gender in Cubatón

Hip-hop and reggaetón have consistently offered examples of hyper-masculinity and homosociality. To a large extent, cubatón (Cuban reggaetón) has followed faithfully in this tradition. At the same time, the particular performances of gender enacted through the lyrics, videos, and marketing of the songs and artists includes a more diverse and complicated array of models of masculinity and femininity. In this talk, she will analyze a few of these examples and discuss what they might signal about Cubaton and contemporary Cuban cultural production.
