Since 2017, CAS in collaboration with the Animals & Society Institute has offered a weeklong institute for about 20 visiting early career faculty members and graduate students from around the US and abroad. Morning workshops, afternoon plenary presentations by visiting and local scholars as well as satellite events on- and off-campus were included in the intensive programming developed by CAS Resident Director Jane Desmond and co-Director Kim Marra (University of Iowa).

To accommodate the continuing logistical hurdles caused by the pandemic, beginning in 2021 the summer institute moved to the Zoom platform. At the heart of the program are intensive morning workshops (synchronous) devoted to discussing participants’ work and plenary lectures by leading HAS scholars (asynchronous). Additional opportunities highlighting different aspects of the human-animal relationship will also be offered. Previously these have included a panel on publishing opportunities, live chat with guest speakers, an art-making workshop, a film screening, and other activities.

Plenary speakers confirmed thus far:

May Berenbaum (Entomology, Illinois)
Maria Elena García (Comparative History of Ideas, University of Washington)
Chris Green (Animal Law & Policy Program, Harvard University)
Robert Mitchell (Psychology, Eastern Kentucky University)
Pete Porter (Film, Eastern Washington University)
