Opening day for the new exhibition Centering Clay: Connection and Innovation in American Studio Ceramics, curated by Kathryn Koca Polite. On view through December 23.

Centering Clay highlights the American Studio Ceramics movement, a period from the 1940s through the 1970s when individual potters shifted from factories and industrial ceramics production to personal studios where they could freely experiment with materials and develop their own techniques and glazes. While some artists continued to make utilitarian vessels, others ventured into abstract and conceptual forms emerging from their own creative self-expression. By drawing on works from the Krannert Art Museum’s collection, Centering Clay not only introduces audiences to midcentury potters and ceramic artists; it also reveals the pedagogical connections among these artists and the exchange of ideas that came to shape their practices. Through archival material and exploring collecting practices, the exhibition also presents the University of Illinois’s role within this revolutionary period.
