The Bow and Trees Galleries, freshly painted with new colors, feature thoughtful reinterpretations of KAM’s collection of European and American art from the 1300s to 1950.

The Bow Gallery showcases art from the Americas and Europe. Thematic groupings include art from the global domains of the House of Habsburg, recent conservation efforts, and more.

On view is the Renaissance Portrait of Diane of France, Daughter of King Henri II, with its remarkable detail and fresh color revealed by recent conservation by Kuniej Berry Associates of Chicago, and Courtyard Scene with a Pregnant Woman: a genre painting by the seventeenth-century Dutch artist Hendrick van der Burch. Eli Wilner & Company recently restored the exquisite eighteenth-century French gilt frame on Van der Burch’s painting, after the New York firm selected KAM as a 2019 recipient of matching funds for their Museum Framing Projects initiative.

The Trees Gallery has also been reimagined and includes a display that celebrates the legacy of Merle J. and Emily N. Trees: the benefactors who gifted their remarkable collection of historical European paintings to the University of Illinois beginning in the 1930s.
