Realizing the potential of precision medicine in biopharma industry

Biopharma industry helps realize the promise of science in the form of lifesaving medicines. However, biopharma research and development is a costly, lengthy endeavor with low probability of success. Progress in our ability to interdict and understand biological systems has led to improved productivity of biopharma R&D. In this seminar, we will cover three aspects of biopharma R&D: 1. Key steps and features of R&D value chain and the decision making process for selecting clinical development projects; 2. A brief overview of precision medicine (right medicine for right patient at the right time) which has enabled better understanding of diseases and has the potential to aid in the discovery of novel medicines, improve R&D efficiency, and enhance patient outcomes; and 3. A review the history of tyrosine kinase inhibitors to illustrate how molecular innovation coupled with precision medicine has improved R&D and led to transformative medicines for leukemia patients.

Amit Agrawal is the Global Head of Precision Medicine for Novartis where he enables discovery, development, and commercialization of diagnostic tests that accompany the medicines. Previously, he led Strategy and Business Development roles at Amgen Inc. and McKinsey&Company. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech, working with Prof. Shuming Nie on ultrasensitive biological detection. He has an undergraduate and master’s degree in Chemistry from IIT, Kanpur. He studied siRNA delivery as a Post-Doc at MIT and has authored 20+ articles.
