Modern Kichwa Speech and the Challenges of a Standard Orthography

Join us for a talk by Prof. Santiago Gualapuro Gualapuro, a Kichwa scholar from Otavalo, Ecuador. He is an Assistant Professor of Linguistics and Spanish at Southern Illinois University and a leading researcher on the linguistic and social aspects of Imbabura Kichwa in Ecuador and the Kichwa diaspora in the United States.

Santiago holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, an MA in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in Hispanic Linguistics from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from The Ohio State University. His activism and involvement in Kichwa language revitalization are the driving force behind his research. He has co-authored the first Kichwa-English dictionary, published by USFQ Press in Ecuador in 2018, and has conducted experimental research on pragmatic interpretation in Imbabura Kichwa and Ecuadorian Spanish.
