The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies is excited to host the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs (MCAA 2023) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus this fall. The conference will be held in person from Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1, 2023, at the I Hotel and Illinois Conference Center.

Open to participants across the world, the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs is an annual conference bringing together scholars of Asian studies from the US Midwest Region (North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio). The MCAA seeks to promote Asian Studies at all educational levels and to encourage scholarly exchange among Asianists in the region and beyond.

The MCAA 2023 will bring over 200 faculty, scholars and students to Illinois for panels, roundtables, individual papers, and workshops focusing on China and Inner Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Asian Diaspora as well as comparative, inter-Asian, and global Asia topics.

Dr. Jean Oi, President of Association for Asian Studies and William Haas Professor of Chinese Politics and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University, will deliver the Keynote Address. A special program in celebration of the life of Professor David Plath will also be presented to honor his work and contribution to the MCAA.
