Focusing on an 1890 map of the upper Niger River region, this talk proposes that significant African agency was involved when Europeans like Gustave Binger (1856-1936) made maps of Africa. Europeans relied on African geographic knowledge and this knowledge was parceled out selectively.

This event will take place in person at 108 Coble Hall and via Zoom.
